Best Practices for Environmental Cleaning in Healthcare Facilities in Resource-Limited Settings

ICAN is delighted to announce the publication of the guidance document Best Practices for Environmental Cleaning in Healthcare Facilities in Resource-Limited Settings’. This new guidance document developed as a collaboration between the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Infection Control Africa Network provides guidance on best practices for environmental cleaning procedures and programs in healthcare facilities in resource-limited settings.

These Best Practices for environmental cleaning in resource-limited settings are derived directly from best practices and cleaning standard documents from several high-resource settings. Using a consensus-driven process, a committee of experts in environmental cleaning in resource-limited settings helped ensure that the best practices most relevant and achievable for the target context are included herein. This document will be updated and improved as new evidence becomes available.

This document includes the best practices for:

  • developing and managing effective environmental cleaning programs, including standard program elements (e.g., monitoring and feedback)
  • selecting and managing environmental cleaning supplies and equipment
  • developing and implementing standard operating procedures for environmental cleaning in patient care areas based on risk-level
