The Sudanese Society of Infection Control (SSIC) was the first newly launched infection prevention society for Africa in 2017. In March, Khartoum was buzzing with excitement as the society prepared for its first International Conference. Professor Ossama Rasslan, the Northern Regional representative of ICAN had been working hard towards setting up training in IPC in Sudan in partnership with the Accreditation Council, which has culminated in SSIC, under the able leadership of Dr Fathia Adam M. Salih. The Minister of Health, and Vice President of Sudan were present at the opening, and offered unwavering support to IPC and SSIC’s commitment towards establishing a career path in IPC. ICAN supported this event with the presence of Prof Shaheen Mehtar, Chair ICAN and Prof Rasslan at the inauguration ceremony and presentations at the conference that followed.
The opening ceremony was preceded by a workshop on Decontamination and followed by a two day conference on IPC, with presentations from Sudanese clinicians and scientist. The one hundred and ten strong group of eager colleagues, debated the topics presented on the latest WHO guidelines and discussed how these could be implemented in Sudan. Other topics about the current state of health and IPC in the Sudan was also discussed. Challenges were identified and discussions on how to overcome these were outlined.
ICAN has committed itself to support SSIC in developing local guidelines in IPC based on the WHO guidelines, curriculum for under and post graduate training in IPC and supporting operational research in the country.
