ICAN had actively contributed to the development and revision of the WHO global strategy and the WHO global action plan and global monitoring framework on infection prevention and control.
On 27-29 August, the WHO infection prevention and control (IPC) Unit and Hub convened a meeting in Geneva, of international IPC experts, including members of the Global IPC Network (GIPCN), Ministry representatives from nine Member States, and WHO professionals. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss strategic approaches and resources for implementing the WHO Global Action Plan and Monitoring Framework (GAP/MF) on IPC, with a view to providing input towards a new Guide to Implementation for the GAP/MF on IPC, currently under development, to identify needs and plans for enhancing country capacity in health care-associated infection surveillance, and to focus on IPC in public health emergencies and IPC training and education. Additionally, the meeting considered the implications for IPC based on the WHO global technical consultation report on proposed terminology for airborne pathogens. Discussions and consensus achieved in all these areas were very rich and inspirational, particularly considering the unique momentum that the international IPC community and countries currently have to enhance IPC and strongly embed it within their national health agenda and monitoring systems, following the adoption of the IPC GAP/MF by all countries at the World Health Assembly. The WHO IPC teams thank all participants for their valuable inputs and look forward to sharing the meeting report soon, as well as the finalized implementation guide, this Autumn.”
ICAN was represented by its Chair, Professor Chedly Azzouz, during the work of this international meeting.
